Kenilworth: Course open. Trolleys allowed. 2 seated buggies not permitted and carrying would be preferred.
Although this event was undersubscribed, that did not diminish the enjoyment of those who took part.
Just four Past Captains and their Guests turned out.
We met and mingled at noon for “light bites” before venturing out for 18 holes with the weather forecast being “wet at times with some thunder and lightning around”. In the event, we experienced a couple of holes of rain (which the course needed in any case) and for the remainder the conditions were just about perfect.
Those taking part were:
Ron Saywell with George Haynes, Past Captain of Leamington & County GC
John Butler with Peter Clayton, Past Captain of Stratford on Avon GC
Richard Joyce with (JJ) John Pritchard, President of Royal Hearsall GC
Brian Melling with his son, David Melling, Past Captain at Whittlebury Park.
Incidentally the playing group of Ron and John, with Peter represented 3 past members of the illustrious Ikoyi Golf Club, Nigeria, although Ron spent most of his Nigerian golfing days at the very special “Ebutte Metta Railway Compound Golf Club” where the Star Beer took precedence over the golf!
As it turned out there was some sparkling golf played and at the Prize Presentation Past Captain Tony Ranger was pleasantly surprised to announce that 2 of the team scores had tied on 45 points. However he had it on good authority from the Kenilworth Treasurer (who had carefully scrutinised the scores) that Ron and George were the winners based on the last 6-hole countback!
Both George and Ron contributed equally to this remarkable stableford score, and particularly the sand bunker recovery of George for a gross 2 on the 7th and Ron’s superb birdie 3 on the 14th gave them the “edge” over the “frail” Octogenarians Team of Peter and John!
Our evening meal was taken in the Committee Room where we enjoyed an excellent meal, prepared and served by our very good staff.
There was universal agreement – this was a very pleasant day of golf and social intercourse, and played on a course which was in superb condition.
The overall sentiment was that we should strive to increase the numbers of participants next year!
Our special thanks also went to Brian Melling, PCA Secretary, who organised the event from start to finish.
