The Club House was bursting at the seams as members and their guests gathered to say goodbye to 2018 and to welcome in the year of 2019. As usual, the notion of "smart casual" was totally ignored by the ladies who donned their party frocks and revelled in their haut couture ensembles for the evening. The gentlemen were somewhat more varied with their evening apparel ranging from just smart casual to extremely smart casual to smart formal - and with an element of fancy dress thrown in for good measure.
The evening began with Prosecco and Canapes - and very tasty canapes they were too. When the staff became too busy behind the bar to continue offering them around the assembled throng Teresa and Paul Donnelly were on hand to continue their work. The hot fork buffet supper was served upstairs and downstairs and the high quality demonstrated with the canapes was continued with the variety on offer for both the hot course and the dessert. Perhaps the most difficult part of the evening was the decision between beef, chicken, fish or veggie pie. Having said that - the decision on dessert was also somewhat of a challenge - but one which the party goers managed to overcome eventually.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Motown Devotions - introducing themselves as the high one, the low one and the other one - but their harmonies successfully reminded most of the guests of the music of the Supremes and other Motown singers back in the day. Whilst the ladies took to the dance floor the gentlemen continued to discuss the problems of the nation - brexit, strikes, the NHS, HS2 - and even more importantly - what's gone wrong with Wasps? Eventually though the dance floor filled with dancers of both genders bouncing, swinging, twisting, mashed potatoeing and doing whatever their chosen exercise happened to be. It is even rumoured that the odd Quickstep took place - but it was quite an odd quick step so the less said about that the better.
The music was provided in 3 sets giving ample time for the Captains to circulate amongst the guests and for the dancers to take a breather before the next session began. The final session continued until the midnight hour - the bongs of Big Ben rang out - whether live or recorded who can tell - but the party goers gathered in their clusters on the dance floor to sing auld lang syne.
And then - it was all over. The band made their farewells. Sue Draper - the organiser of the evening's festivies - passed on a vote of thanks to the band, to the front of house staff and to the chefs. Our thanks are due to Sue for a wonderful evening all round - a super way to go into the New Year - thanks Sue - great party.
So with that - I'll wish a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all our Readers.
